During her fellowship Lydia Nsiah takes the “Queer/Trans*/Inter/Black People/ People of Color Resistance”-archive as a starting point to work on her artistic output in her interdisciplinary series to forget (2017-ongoing).
NO DOCUMENTATION IS ALSO DOCUMENTATION: in connection to the realisation that Western archive systems dehumanize objects and materials (writings, photographs, films, …), making them untouchable and collect dust within categorizations (and display cases and frames), the artist deals with the mostly negative connotations of what it means to forget. In doing so, she filters out possible potential acts of forgetting and focuses on them in an artistic manner. With the intention of breaking open common forms of narration and documentation, she plans on adding to the discourse surrounding archive politics by highlighting empty spaces.
Through her conceptual understanding of working with remembrance – a process formed by remembering and forgetting – the interviews and documentations collected by WE DEY x SPACE are put into a dialogue.
Lydia Nsiah lives and works in Vienna, and on the road. She studied fine arts, as well as film and media sciences in Vienna, Berlin, Montreal, and Amsterdam. She is currently doing her dissertation at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. As an artist and as a researcher she deals with gaps and what is in between in media and knowledge production through film, photography, text, and installations: in reference to cultural science and media philosophy, her works internalize and transform found and shot, analogue and digital memory images and sounds. Her themes are remembrance and cultures of forgetting, practice of archiving, mistakes/errors, cinematographic art and instructional film, essay film, and photographic film. Her works have been shown, among others in the context of REMASTERED Kunsthalle Krems (AT) | Curtocircuíto, Santiago de Compostela (ES) | Curtas Vila do Conde IFF (PT) | Antimatter [Media Art], Deluge Contemporary Art Gallery, Victoria, BC (CA) | Cork Film Festival (IE) and New Horizons International Film Festival Wroclaw (PL).
