Statement by the Jury:
“We appreciate the actuality of Jihad’s project, the exploratory form of its conception and creation, as well as the personal risk and courage it requires. We acknowledge the self-reflection the project is based upon, the fact that it entangles different places and cultures and that it confronts the discrimination and prejudices with humor. We especially value the future personal artistic development this project offers and are sincerely looking forward to witness the impact it has for the wider audiences in Vienna.”
“My name is Jihad AL-khatib. I was born in Saudi Arabia in 1988 and moved to Palestine in 1998 and started to study in my village high school. After graduating I planned to travel to Syria in order to study acting but my plan did not work out, so I decided to learn management at “Al-Quds Open University” in Ramallah for five years.
In 2009 I applied the first time at the acting school, but they did not take me. But in this same year I acted in a movie called “Habibe Rasak Kharban”. This motivated me to apply once more for the acting school in year 2010. And they took me. During the study I had the oppportunity to play in several productions, in theater and film. In 2015-2016 I was part of the EVS (European Voluntary Service) project with the Erasmus+ Organization in Perg, Upper Austria. After finishing the project I moved to Vienna, where I started to work as an actor and took part in three movies. While doing my studies, I also gathered experience in several different jobs. For example in restaurants, in a bakery and as a drama coach.”
